Updated: Jul 27, 2019
If Becoming a Graphic Designer is your biggest dream, but you don’t know how to start and you don't believe in Yourself to be able to do it because of so many excuses in your head?
Then this Article is really for you.
What do you need to prepare to become a graphic designer?
1. Dream
What? Just a dream?
Yes, just a dream, my career to become a graphic designer just started with day dreaming when I was 12 years old, I admit at that time my dream was being a fashion designer, I love to draw gowns and used to imagined it with my close friend, that one day I would have my own studio, until I figured out by myself that Graphic Design was the best choice for me. Because I believe that I can grow more in Graphic Design since it has a broader spectrum of field to play with. At that time, I had no clue on how to start, my drawing skills and my taste at that time were so bad, all that I had was just a dream!
2. Courageous to Learn.
I started my education as a Graphic Designer by signing-up in the Art and Design Major in Bina Nusantara University, Indonesia. On the first semester I wasn’t very good, I was always getting B or C and for someone who is very passionate, I always want to get A and be the best. After every task that I did even if I wasn't making it very well at that time, it didn't affect my belief of becoming a Graphic Designer. Every mistake that I made has been a lesson for me and at the end of the semester I was awarded the best final project in my university. Even until now, years after university, I am always learning and learning new skills. For me in life we must learn everything that we are passionate about in life. Nowadays its easy to access knowledge thanks to Internet, there are no limits, the only limit is your imagination.
For you who want to skill up and be better , here is a website that I like and I always buy online courses from it; www.Udemy.com
3. Confidence
Confidence is the key to success. I have seen so many good graphic designers, but they don’t have any confidence in what they do, I also have been in that phase. Feeling not confident and useless with my skills
and my ability to create, but this was driving me nowhere. So, one day I promise to myself that I will no longer be part of that torturing cycle of disbelief of my own ability. From that moment of mind shift, everything changed, and I started becoming the person I always wanted to be.
4. Market yourself
Market yourself is a crucial skill that you have to know as a Graphic Designer or even, for whatever that you do in life. It is just a good design if you don't know how to sell it. I have done so many researches and read so many books to boost my sales and income as graphic designer. To be honest, I was really bad at this but back to lesson number 2, that if you think you are bad at something, do not quit - instead learn from your mistake!
So those are 4 starter tip to become Graphic Designer that I would like to share with you, Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below, I would love to hear it!
